These portraits are from an on-going body of work capturing the community of Todmorden where Poiša relocated in early 2019. Close Encounters is a reference to both the rich mythology of Todmorden which is one of the country’s UFO hotspots and the personal, domestic spaces where the photographer encounters the sitter. The subjects are all photographed with their pet cats. The cats play on the photographer’s personal fascination with felines, yet they also signify escapism and a need for distractions in the face of global uncertainty.
